Justice Department Won't Pursue Criminal Charges Against Andrew McCabe

Andrew McCabe Signs Copies Of His New Book "The Threat: How The FBI Protects America In The Age Of Terror And Trump"

The Justice Department informed former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe that they will not be pursuing criminal charges against him. The department spent two years investigating claims that he gave inaccurate statements to FBI investigators about his involvement in leaking documents to the media.

Despite claiming on multiple occasions that he did not give information to a Wall Street Journal reporter about the FBI's investigation into the Clinton Foundation, an Inspector General's report found that he "lacked candor" when discussing the matter. He was fired by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions just one day before he would have been eligible for an early retirement pension.

Last year, officials told McCabe's lawyers that the former FBI director should expect to face charges, but according to Politicoit is believed a grand jury rejected the allegations.

The government sent a letter to McCabe's lawyers saying that the case has been closed.

"We write to inform you that, after careful consideration, the Government has decided not to pursue criminal charges against your client, Andrew G. McCabe," prosecutors J.P. Cooney and Molly Gaston wrote on behalf of the new U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Tim Shea. "Based on the totality of the circumstances and all of the information known to the Government at this time, we consider the matter closed."

McCabe's lawyers issued a statement praising the decision to drop the case.

"At long last, justice has been done in this matter," attorneys Michael Bromwich and David Schertler said. "We said at the outset of the criminal investigation, almost two years ago, that if the facts and the law determined the result, no charges would be brought. We are pleased that Andrew McCabe and his family can go on with their lives without this cloud hanging over them."
