Former vice presidential candidate Tim Walz blamed himself for the current "mess" the Democratic Party faces following the loss to President Donald Trump in the 2024 election.

Walz, 60, the governor of Minnesota, claimed the party "wouldn't be in this mess" if he and Vice President Kamala Harris had defeated Trump in November while appearing on MSNBC's All In With Chris Hayes Wednesday (March 12) night.

“We have to make sure that Americans know its just not that Donald Trump is bad, but that we’re offering something better,” he added.

Walz referred to several of Trump's policies, including imposing tariffs on Canadian imports, stricter immigration guidelines and cutting the Department of Education, as "incredibly disruptive." The Minnesota governor specifically claimed that tariffs had a negative impact on his home state as both sides of the U.S.-Canada border facing consequences.

“Donald Trump is this caricature that had a reality TV show that pretended like he knew how to run businesses,” Walz said. “The reality is he doesn’t.”

“The claim that he is the business president. He is the worst possible business executive that I have ever witnessed,” he added.

Walz did admit that some of Trump's policies made sense to many Americans while continuing his rant against the president.

“Look, I’m conservative and I believe that systems work for a long time, that you don’t have to break them. Are there improvements that need to be done? Yes, and I think we’re guilty of sometimes of not acting. Could the Department of Education be more efficient? Absolutely,” he said.

“We have not provided what that alternative looks like and I think it’s fair,” Walz added.
